Established in 1937 (1994 BS) in Birta, Birgunj, Shree Trijuddha Mahabir Prasad Raghubir Ram Secondary School is a prestigious educational institution with a rich legacy, holding the honour of being the oldest school in Terai-Madhesh and the second oldest in Nepal, following Durbar High School, Kathmandu.
Originally founded as 'Nepal Government High English School Birgunj,' the school combines a rich legacy of academic excellence with modern technical and English-medium curricula, successfully competing with private institutions by providing high-quality, disciplined, and accessible education to over 4,000 students.
Trijuddha Secondary School was founded through the persistent efforts of local merchant brothers Raghubir Ram and Mahabir Prasad, who sought permission from the then-Rana Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher to bring formal education to the region. Symbolizing a political balance of the era, the school was named by combining the names of King Tribhuvan and PM Juddha Shumsher. Since its inception, the institution has been a pioneer; its first building was donated in 1940, and it initially sought academic leadership from Kolkata, India, appointing Banamali Bhattacharya as its first Headmaster.
Trijuddha Secondary School has long been a powerhouse of academic merit, boasting an illustrious list of SLC (now SEE) Board toppers. Between 1947 and 1974, the school produced several national champions, including Rameshwar Prasad Upadhyay, Damodar Prasad Kyal, and Suman Kumari Khanal, who topped the board in the girls' category. This tradition of excellence continues today, as the school has transitioned into a comprehensive institution offering diverse streams, including Science and Management at the Higher Secondary level (Grade 11-12) and specialized Technical Education in Civil Engineering since 2016.
In a significant strategic move, the school returned to a full English medium curriculum in 2015 (2072 BS)—reverting to its original roots after having switched to Nepali medium in 1971 following the "New Education" plan. This transition has revitalized the institution, making it a formidable competitor to private schools. Parents who previously opted for expensive private education are now returning to Trijuddha, citing the high quality of instruction, strict discipline, and the school’s ability to offer a private-school standard of education within a public-school framework.
Spanning across three bighas of land in Birta, Birgunj, the school currently serves approximately 4,000 students through a two-shift (Morning and Day) system. The institution is notable for its commitment to inclusive education, providing residential facilities for visually impaired students. Modern facilities include smart classrooms, a library, a large auditorium, separate canteens for boys and girls, and a science laboratory currently under construction. With a dedicated team of 115 teachers, the school maintains a low-cost model, offering free education up to Grade 10 and charging only a nominal support fee for Grades 11 and 12.
Under the current leadership of Headmaster Nabin Kumar Mishra and School Management Committee Chairman Rupeshman Singh, Trijuddha is focused on continuous quality improvement and infrastructure expansion. The management remains committed to upholding the deep-rooted trust of the Birgunj community, ensuring that the school remains a beacon of affordable, high-quality, and disciplined education for future generations.
