Kathmandu, Aug 28 – Tribhuvan University (TU) and the All Nepal National Free Students Union (Revolutionary), affiliated with the CPN (Maoist Center), have reached a four-point agreement, bringing an end to the union’s 34-day-long protest.
The protest had been launched to demand a reduction in fees charged to students of four departments under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences: International Relations, Peace, Conflict, and Development; Gender Studies; and Social Work. These departments, previously operated as programs, have been recently upgraded to full departments.
According to the agreement signed between TU’s Monitoring Directorate Executive Director, Pushpa Prasad Khanal, and a representative of the protesting students, the study fee has been fixed at Rs. 110,000. The revised fee structure will be implemented from the current second semester. The deal also ensures the implementation of scholarship provisions in accordance with existing rules and the gradual upgrading of the departments.
Earlier, when the programs were independently managed, administrative, academic, and financial responsibilities were borne through student fees, leading to higher charges compared to other departments. However, despite TU taking over the expenses after converting them into departments, the fee structure had remained unchanged, sparking discontent among the Revolutionary student union.
The prolonged protest had been affecting the daily functioning of TU officials. With the agreement, the union has officially withdrawn its movement.
