Tribhuvan University (TU) held a press conference at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office in Kirtipur on December 19 to provide key details and arrangements for its 51st convocation. The briefing, organized by the Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCoE) TU, informed the media about participants, venue, awards, and other preparations for the ceremony.
Addressing the media, Prof. Dr.Deepak Aryal, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Tribhuvan University, informed that the convocation will be held at the Dasharath Stadium on December 25, with the presence of approximately 50,000 attendees, including 16,380 graduates and their guardians from among 81,191 students who passed in the academic session.
A major highlight of this convocation is the participation of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Professor Takaaki Kajita as the Chief Guest from the University of Tokyo, Japan, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2015. This will be the first time a Nobel laureate attends TU’s convocation, a step that TU believes will enhance its international educational reputation, global outreach, and academic excellence. The university's VC Prof Dr Deepak Aryal said that the pride of the university in the international arena will increase thanks to the participation of the Novel laureate. Prof. Dr. Kedar Prasad Rizal, Registrar of TU, explained that inviting the Nobel laureate is intended to inspire Nepali youth and uphold the university’s prestige.
During the press conference, Prof. Dr. Laxman Poudel, Controller of Examinations, provided information regarding the management of the convocation, certificate distribution, and security arrangements.
Participation and Attendance
Tribhuvan University stated that the convocation will include graduates from Bachelor’s, Master’s, Postgraduate, MPhil, and PhD levels from the academic session running 1st Ashad 2081 to 31st Jestha 2082. A total of 89,199 students completed their programs during this period.
Among them, 16,380 students have formally applied to participate in the convocation. The breakdown by program is as follows:
- Bachelor’s: 11,234 students
- PGD: 14 students
- Master's: 4,860 students
- MPhil: 120 students
- PhD: 152 students
In addition, 23,980 guardians have also applied to attend. Including invited guests and other participants, the total estimated attendance is expected to be around 42,000, according to Registrar Prof. Dr. Kedar Prasad Risal.
“Each student can be accompanied by two guardians. Including students and guardians, approximately 50,000 people are expected to be present at the stadium,” Registrar Risal added.
The event will be organized by the Office of the Controller of Examinations, Balkhu, and if the expected number of attendees joins, it will mark the largest convocation in TU’s history.
During a press conference, the university's VC Deepak Aryal informed that the university has already reached a formal decision to conduct the convocation ceremonies provincially from next year, considering the increasing number of graduates from the university.
Awards and Ceremonial Program
Around 25 convocation medals and awards are scheduled to be distributed during the ceremony. Additionally, 52 Senate members will participate in the event in formal academic regalia.
Presiding and Special Guests
The convocation will be presided over by TU’s Chancellor and Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, and Co-Vice Chancellor Mahabir Pun will also attend as a special guest. Prof. Dr. Deepak Aryal, Vice-Chancellor of TU, will participate as a special guest of honor.
