Tribhuvan University to Award Academic Credits for Extracurricular Achievements

Students of Tribhuvan University will now receive marks in their academic certificates for their talents and contributions shown in extracurricular activities alongside their studies.

The university has introduced a policy to formally include extracurricular activities in academic credit for the first time in the country. According to  Dr. Deependra Parajuli, the Director of the Student Welfare and Sports Directorate, if students perform excellently in fields such as social service, disaster management, sports, fine arts, science and technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and management, their performance will be evaluated and included as marks in their academic certificates.

He stated, "Marks will not be awarded simply upon the submission of a certificate showing excellent performance in a competition, program, or opportunity within or outside the university. Before that, the student's entire activity will be monitored, documented, and verified through a central mechanism."

For this purpose, coordinators of the National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Vice-Chancellor’s Cup Sports, Fine Arts, and Science, Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship programs at each campus level are required to submit official records regarding student participation, time involved (hours), and performance every semester. These details will be verified and approved by the Directorate of Student Welfare and Sports of Tribhuvan University.

Additionally, a central digital system will be developed to record all student activities, participation hours, and earned credit marks. Through an integrated dashboard based on Google Forms/Sheets, the credits earned by individual students, students who have completed the required hours per program, and a comparative status between campuses will be clearly visible.

The achievements will be included as marks in the academic certificates based on the certificates submitted by the students only after being centrally monitored and verified. Dr. Parajuli mentioned that this policy will not only increase the overall grade of the students but will also provide significant support in identifying, developing, and institutionally encouraging hidden talents in various fields.

Students who perform excellently under the NSS, NCC, Vice-Chancellor’s Cup Sports, Fine Arts, and ITE programs, which the university has already included in its academic curriculum, will benefit directly from this system. Similarly, a policy has been introduced to provide opportunities for students who achieve top marks in every central department to serve within the university by appointing them as Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants. Furthermore, a provision has been proposed to provide special facilities in the admission process for students who have demonstrated excellence in various genres outside the university.
