Prime Minister and Chancellor of universities in Nepal, Sushila Karki, has stated that it is not possible for the Prime Minister(PM) to serve as Chancellor of every university. Addressing the Tribhuvan University (TU) Senate meeting on Wednesday, she said that the PM should be removed from the post of University Chancellor.

Karki mentioned that Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, Mahabir Pun, is working on this matter. She explained, "The PM serves as the Chancellor of seventeen universities. It is neither feasible for the PM to be the Chancellor of every single university, nor is it right to appoint a political figure as the Chancellor."  Karki also suggested that the University Senate itself should select the Chancellor.

She argued that while the PM may have been the Chancellor until now, it is no longer necessary.  "The government should look after the universities, but it should not interfere in making policies, rules, and laws," explained Karki, adding, "It turns out that due to political figures, the policies and programs that should have been passed in Asar  have not been approved until now."

The TU Senate passed the policies and programs for the fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/2026). Karki suggested that the university should consider generating revenue on its own. She shared, "It is not right to always depend only on the government. The university can also earn by designing academic programs accordingly. Teachers and students can work together to earn within the university."
