Nepal has a large number of universities and colleges established to provide higher education; however, Nepali students continue to spend a significant amount on studying abroad.
According to the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal, published by the Central Bank on Sunday with annual data, travel payments rose by 18.1 percent to Rs 223.72 billion, of which Rs 138.48 billion was spent on education. It has also been stated that in the previous year, these figures stood at Rs 189.43 billion and Rs 125.13 billion, respectively.
The Nepal Rastra Bank also reported that the net services income recorded a deficit of Rs 90.94 billion in 2024/25, up from a deficit of Rs 55.86 billion the year before. Under the service account, travel income increased by 7.7 percent, reaching Rs 88.66 billion, compared to Rs 82.33 billion in the previous year.
