Government to Scrap Mandatory Equivalency for Domestic University Graduates

The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology is in the final stages of removing the equivalency requirement for graduates for the purpose of further studies in another domestic university or government employment.

This initiative is made so that students who complete their studies at one domestic university will not need to obtain an equivalency certificate when seeking employment or enrolling in another university for further studies within the country.

Currently, students who have studied at any university in Nepal are required to obtain an equivalency certificate from Tribhuvan University (TU) when applying for government jobs or transferring to another university for further education. This provision is not based on any specific law but has continued since the Panchayat era based on a cabinet decision. Since 1973 (2030 BS), Tribhuvan University has been performing this task following that cabinet mandate.

At present, all federal universities operating within the country are governed by acts passed by the Federal Parliament. Most of these universities have the Prime Minister as the Chancellor and the Minister of Education, Science, and Technology as the Pro-Chancellor.

Despite being governed by laws of a similar nature, students have criticized the fact that one university's academic certificate is not trusted by another. Furthermore, the tedious process of obtaining an equivalency certificate from TU has caused significant hardship for service seekers.

In a major move to simplify academic transitions, the government took this initiative to abolish the long-standing requirement for students to obtain equivalency certificates when shifting between domestic universities.
