In a decisive move to professionalize the nation's education sector, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has issued a notice cautioning all teachers, professors, students, and staff against involvement in political party activities. The Ministry also decided not to grant recognition to any associations and organizations of teachers, professors, and staff that are mentioned, either directly or indirectly, as sister organizations or well-wishing organizations in the rules/statutes of different political parties.
The Ministry took this decision following widespread public complaints that organizations like the Nepal Teachers' Federation, the professional organizations affiliated with it, and the professional organizations of university professors and staff, which were established to bargain for professional rights and interests, are engaging in political activities contrary to their professional duties, ethical obligations, and code of conduct. These activities are cited as the cause for the decline in educational quality.
In the press release signed by Minister Pun on Sunday, it is stated, "While we always respect the professional rights and interests of teachers/staff, as well as their constitutionally granted rights and the exercise thereof, and are sensitive about the use and protection of these rights, I urge organizations active in the education sector, including the Teachers' Federation and Professors' Association, to reorganize with appropriate legal provisions for the purpose of making them non-political, independent, and professional in nature."
The notice further mentions that if anyone is found engaging in activities contrary to their professional duties, ethical obligations, code of conduct, the sensitivity of the education sector, and the core essence of schools or universities as peace zones, they will be punished according to the prevailing law, including even dismissal from their post.
