Social work is a professional and academic discipline committed to the pursuit of social welfare and social change. The field works towards research and practice to improve the quality of life and to the development of the potential of each individual, group and community of a society. Social workers perform interventions through research, policy, community organizing, direct practice and teaching. Research is often focused on areas such as human psychosocial development, social policy, public administration, program evaluation and international and community development. Masters of Social Work is currently being offered at Tribhuvan University premises (Kirtipur), Center for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS) Building Kirtipur (2nd Floor), Room no: 207.
Social work, an interdisciplinary field, includes theories from economics, education, medicine, politics, psychology, and sociology, as well as anti-oppressive and anti-racist discourse.Social work in today has become a full fledged profession with highly trained professionals. People having compassion for the poor, the deprived and the disadvantaged usually opt for this career.
Eligibility
The applicant must have a Bachelor's Degree of a minimum 3 years duration or equivalent (under 10+2+3 Or 10+2+4) from a recognized university in any faculty, with a minumum of second division.
Job Prospects
Job opportunities in Social Work vary with the kind of specialization that a person has opted for. The jobs available in the Nepalese market are:
- Employment in NGOs working for the improvement of rural health, sanitation and lifestyle.
- After gaining some experience MSWs can be appointed as consultants with various organizations.
- Teaching is another option for Social workers.
- The M.S.W degree holds good for international market as well. Premier international organizations like WHO, UNESCO and UNICEF employ social workers in awareness campaigns and projects meant for developing countries. Internationally recognized NGOs that employ Nepalese social workers also pay well.
