Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences (NAIHS) is a not-for-profit medical education endeavor of the Welfare Fund of the Nepali Army, established with a vision of developing skilled and professional human resources in the field of medical education by providing an optimal educational environment and improving the quality of medical service of the Nepali Army and the nation as a whole. It is managed by the Directorate of Welfare Planning of the Nepali Army. Its advisory committee comprises all relevant directorates of the Nepali Army under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
To ensure simplified and easy access of army children in the field of medical education, General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung (Retd), by then COAS, laid the foundation stone of NAIHS on 2067/08/02 B.S., but later inaugurated by then right Honorable President of Nepal, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, on 10th Jestha 2069 B.S. (23 May 2012 A.D.).
NAIHS operates under the affiliation of Tribhuvan University, Nepal’s oldest and most prestigious university. This institution is recognized by the Medical Education Commission, Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council, and Nepal Health Professional Council. These affiliations ensure that the programs offered are of high academic and professional standards.
NAIHS ensures medical education to the children of regular and retired army personnel, heroic death or death in line of duty, and fully disabled army personnel, as well as the general public, with the provision of fixed quotas. Under its two colleges (College of Medicine and College of Nursing) NAIHS currently caters 3 super specialization (DM/MCH), 23 Post Graduate (MD/MS/MN) courses & 5 Bachelor level programs (MBBS, B.Sc. Nursing, BNS, BPH and B.Sc. MLT). NAIHS aims to extend its Bachelor's level programs like BDS, B. Pharm. BPT etc, Post Graduate programs and super specialization programs in the near future.
In these past glorious years of establishment, NAIHS has proven itself to be one of the premier institutes in the field of health professions' education and is among the top choices of medical students in Nepal. Overall, NAIHS strives to address the existing medical, paramedical, and nursing health professionals in Nepal by encompassing all health-related fields.
Shree Birendra Hospital is the teaching hospital of NAIHS and is located in Chauni, Kathmandu. It is a tertiary-level, modern, central, and referral hospital of the Nepali Army. The hospital currently has 635 beds and it provides almost all types of medical services to the serving army personnel and their dependents, retired army personnel and their dependents, civilian faculty members and staffs of NAIHS and their dependents.
