Entrance Application Open for PhD Programs 2082: Tribhuvan University Institute of Science and Technology

The Institute of Science and Technology (IoST), Dean's Office at Tribhuvan University (TU), Kirtipur, has officially opened applications for Ph.D. enrollment for the academic year 2082 BS. This announcement is for candidates aspiring to pursue doctoral research under various Central Departments of IoST.

The notice, issued on 2082/03/02 BS, includes the complete schedule and procedures for Ph.D. enrollment. Interested candidates are advised to contact the respective Central Departments for additional details.

Key Dates and Application Process

Application Submission

  • Application Period: From Ashadh 15 to the end of Shrawan, 2082 BS.
  • Where to Submit: Respective Central Departments of IoST, TU.
  • Documents Required: Ph.D. Application Form and Research Proposal.
  • Application Fee: NPR 2,500 to be submitted along with the proposal.

Proposal Defense

  • The Proposal Defense must be conducted by the respective Central Departments by Bhadra 20, 2082 BS.
  • Only candidates who successfully pass the Proposal Defense will proceed to the entrance examination phase.

Entrance Exam Registration

  • After passing the Proposal Defense, candidates must submit:
    • Revised Proposal
    • Entrance Examination Form
    • Voucher of NPR 3,000 deposited at Nepal Bank Limited (Account No: 04500100099107000001)
    • All required documents
  • Submission Deadline: By the end of Bhadra, 2082 BS.

Entrance Examination Schedule

  • Exam Date: Ashwin 29, 2082 ( October 15, 2025 ) - Wednesday
  • Time and Center: To be announced later
  • Commencement of Classes: Mangsir 1, 2082 ( November 17, 2025 ) 

Entrance Examination Structure

  • The entrance examination will consist of 100 objective questions.
    • 70% from the subject area of the applicant
    • 30% from Research Methodology related to the discipline

Basic Requirements

  • All applicants must pass the entrance examination conducted by IoST, TU.
  • A minimum 3.0/4.0 CGPA or equivalent in a Master’s Degree (M.Sc. in relevant discipline or M.A. in Mathematics or Statistics) from TU or any university recognized by TU is required for full-time enrollment.

Work Experience Requirements for Part-Time Enrollment

  • Candidates with 3.0/4.0 CGPA in M.Sc. or equivalent: Minimum 2 years of work experience.
  • Candidates with 3.3/4.0 CGPA in M.Sc. or equivalent: Minimum 1 year of work experience.
  • Candidates passed with 3.7/4.0 CGPA or distinction: No work experience required.
  • Candidates with at least one publication as first author in a Q1 or Q2 ranked SCImago-listed journal do not require work experience.

For Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Programs

  • Candidates must complete a 30 Credit Hour (CH) conversion course in the relevant discipline, recommended by the subject committee and approved by the CDRC. Completion of this course makes the candidate eligible for Ph.D. award in that department.

  • Acceptance Letter from Supervisor/Co-supervisor
  • Recommendation Letter from CDRC
  • No Objection Letter from Employer (if employed)
  • Nature of Job and Experience Letter (if applicable)
  • Study Leave Assurance Letter (for full-time candidates from employer)
  • Plagiarism Checking Report (as per IoST rules)

Special Note for TU Faculty:
Tribhuvan University teaching staff applying as full-time researchers must obtain prior approval from the Office of the Rector, Coordination Division. For this, applicants must contact the Coordination Division. Non-TU employees must submit a No Objection Letter from their employer.
